Northwest Michigan has so much to offer, whatever your interests are, there is something for just about everyone. Like the water? You’re not going to find too many places anywhere that offers more opportunities for all things aquatic, from kayaking, sailing, power boating, scuba, or just enjoying the beaches, it’s all here and it’s all some of the best you will find. If you are into hiking & biking, you’ll find some of the best trails in the nation right here. Trails like the Little Traverse Wheelway that stretches from Charlevoix to Petoskey, with plans to connect to Traverse City. With Charlevoix and Petoskey offering some of the best in the arts and crafts, with shows throughout the summer featuring the eclectic to fine art, and a music scene second to none with so many concerts and music festivals that the hardest part about living here is which ones to attend. Winter brings snowmobiling, skiing at one of the many nearby resorts, and winter festivals. With both Petoskey and Charlevoix offering so much, and such a high quality of life, it’s easy to see why this is the choice area for many. With all these great activities available, coupled with how many other great towns are in close proximity, like Boyne City and Mackinaw close by, with all they offer, sometimes the hardest part of moving here is which town to move to. Here is a home that solves that dilemma. Situated midway between Charlevoix and Petoskey, right of US-31 in desirable Michigan Shores, this 3 bedroom, 2 bath home has been meticulously cared for by it’s owners. With multi level decks, and open kitchen it’s perfect for entertaining. Main floor laundry, and plenty of room it’s also a great family home. New roof last year, great landscaping, and location just steps from both Lake Michigan and The Little Traverse Wheelway make this a must see if you’re looking to make the move to this awesome area.
How many times have we heard of the importance of teamwork? Or how two heads are better than one? We have all heard all the cliches, the aphorisms, that describe how much better things can go when we work together as a team, with a common goal. Too many times people hear the word teamwork, but don’t really listen to what it truly means. We see it in sports, politics, the workplace, even in our families. There are times when it seems like there are egos that just can’t grasp the concept of teamwork. They may even be the ones who talk the talk, but when it comes down to making things happen, well, let’s just say a lot of things have gone undone because of a Texas sized ego getting in the way. We’ve all experienced it at one time or another.
Earlier this year another Realtor in my office asked me if I would be interested in becoming a team, working together on marketing real estate. I welcomed the opportunity, in part because I liked the idea of being part of a team, but also because I knew there was a lot I could learn from him, and hopefully I could contribute something that would help the team.
Here in Bellaire, in Northern Michigan’s Chain-O-Lakes area, we are mostly a resort community. Not a place where people have to buy a home, but where they want to buy one. We do have people moving into and out of the area, but primarily sales of properties here are second homes, or hunting properties, with the lions share of sales being in The Shanty Creek Resorts community. Winter brings us the skiers and snowmobilers that help get us through the cold season, summer brings us the golfers, boaters, and those that just love all that this area offers. That puts spring and fall as our traditionally slow periods. When it’s busy, things can get hectic here, when it slows down, it doesn’t seem like there is enough. When I was working solo, when it became the slow season, I would almost feel like giving up at times. When the busy season came around, there were times I felt overwhelmed. As part of a team, things are much more orderly, with two of to focus on business, not only are we able to keep busy during off times, but we can work together during the busy season to keep things on track and in order.
The real winners in our case is not just Team Chain-O-Lakes, but our clients. With a team, they can be certain that one of us is available for anything they need. Instead of calling with a question or a need, only to find out your Realtor is out of town, or out with other clients, one of us is usually available. Since becoming a team, we have seen our productivity go up, and that has not been the trend with other Realtors I have talked to. If you have been thinking of buying a condominium, lake home, or resort or hunting property in the best part of Northern Michigan, Antrim or Charlevoix County, or maybe you already have a home or property here and are thinking of selling, call Team Chain-O-Lakes, part of Coldwell Banker Schmidt. The number one real estate company of Northwest Michigan.

It’s that time of year again, the warm summer evenings are giving way to cool, crisp fall nights. The docks are starting to come out of the lakes, the marinas and boat storage places are starting to become occupied by rows of blue plastic winter wraps.
To many, this is a time of year that comes much too quickly every year, and as we get older it seems like the summers are shorter every year. I have to admit, I have that feeling sometimes. Specially when I realize my summer toys will soon be put away, to be replaced by the winter ones. The motorcycle & kayaks will be replaced by snowshoes, skis & snowmobiles. Yes, it can be a depressing thought for many, but I do love the fall and everything it brings. The colors in the trees, the apple cider and doughnuts, the aroma of wood burning fireplaces, the slowing down of town.
The beautiful thing about living here in Antrim County, in northwest Michigan is that this is truly a four season region, with superb hunting, many orchards & vineyards, beautiful roads to enjoy the color tours, and knowing right after that comes the white stuff that so many of us actually love to play in. We are right in the heart of the best area in the mid west for all of it. From world class ski resorts like Shanty Creek, Boyne, and Crystal Mtn Resorts, to great snowmobile trails, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. This truly is as good as it gets, with Nub’s knob, Boyne Highlands & Crystal Mountain all within an hour away, Boyne Mtn 20 min away, and Shanty Creek/Schuss Mountain right here, winter activities are bountiful here. When you’re ready to get out on the town after playing all day, Bellaire offers great places to eat and drink like Short’s Brewery, Lulu’s Bistro, and so many others, and places like Traverse City, Petoskey, Charlevoix, Gaylord, Leenanau Peninsula and many others that offer something for everybody within a 45 minute drive.
If your like most of us here, and like a truly four season region, then nowhere is better than Antrim County, specifically Bellaire, Mi. The geological center of all that makes this THE year-around place for living, playing, or just relaxing. To quote a recent visitor, “It just doesn’t get any better than this!”

According to Realtor Magazine, sales for resort properties are up well above the rest of the real estate market. As more and more buyers are opting for a getaway place, and even looking to find the place they would like to retire to, they also want a place they can enjoy an active lifestyle, and some take advantage of being able to put these properties in a rental program, or with the help of websites like VRBO.com, rent them out on their own. Whichever way you go, it helps to defray the cost, in some instances, the income from rentals actually pay all the cost of ownership & then some.
If you have ever thought about purchasing a resort property, you couldn’t ask for a better time than now, and you couldn’t find too many places better than here in Antrim & Charlevoix counties in northwest Michigan. Shanty Creek Resorts, which include Cedar River, Schuss Mountain, and Shanty Creek offers everything most resort owners are looking for. Like the water? World famous Torch Lake is right down the road, Lake Bellaire is basically across the street, The Chain of Lakes, which include Torch, Elk, Bellaire, Skegamog, and many more are all accessed from here in Bellaire. The Jordan River is nearby too. If kayaking and canoeing, fishing Blue Ribbon trout streams, Lake Michigan fishing and exploring, or just relaxing on the water is your thing, this is the place to be.
Maybe it’s golf you are looking for. Shanty Creek Resorts offers four world class courses, including the Arnold Palmer designed Legend, & Tom Weiskopf designed Cedar River CG’s, not to mention the other six local courses just outside of the resort property.
Fall brings the magnificent colors, hunting, and all the other things that make this area such a great place to be that time of year, and it ushers in the part of year that the skiers wait for. With 50 runs, The Resort offers something for every kind of skier and snowboarder, and Boyne Mtn, plus Crystal Mtn are less than an hour away, to add some variety.

With mortgage rates still low, and the prices of homes and property, while creeping up, but lagging what prices are doing in the metro areas, now is probably one of the best times we have ever seen to own a piece of this paradise. From golfing, hiking the best nature trails, fishing and boating, hunting, skiing, nightlife, wineries, motorcycling, both on and off road, shopping and dining, to just relaxing in northern Michigan by the bonfire, there really is no where better than here in the Antrim/Charlevoix area. On Sunday, May 25 The Detroit News ran a feature in the homes section about cottages, lakefront, and resort homes in northern Michigan. While the article was very good, and focused on the upper end of homes, half million dollar and up, which we do have a good share of here around Torch Lake, Lakes Michigan, Bellaire, and Charlevoix, the rest of the story is that there are many beautiful homes available here for a lot less also. Nice homes and condominiums priced from the $50,000.00 range. All within a few miles of the area lakes, golf courses, ski resorts, and all the other things that make this the perfect place to live or vacation.
For example, we just listed a gorgeous, completely remodeled chalet in Schuss Village with 1400 sq.ft., custom features throughout, including a master bath with an over sized jaccuzi tub, plus a walk in shower, central air, sitting on 2+ lots, in an area of other beautiful homes priced at 149,500. Another new one on the market is on Thayer Lake, one of the prettiest lakes you will find anywhere. This custom home is 1800 sq.ft, comes completely furnished, including a boat with motor, and a kayak, all for 279,000. join us on facebook
Maybe a condo is more suitable for your lifestyle. Nice 2bedroom/2bath units at the resort (Shanty Creek), are on the market from the mid 50’s. 1 bedroom Hotel style rooms, with efficiency layouts, from around 10,000. High end condos are available at Cedar River also, if you want all the luxuries.
Maybe you would like to build your own custom home. Lots in the resort can be had for around 3000.00 and up.
whatever you are looking for in a vacation, retirement, or a year around home, from a simple cottage, hunting land, and condos, to million dollar lakefront homes, Antrim & Charlevoix Counties offer something for everyone.
Riding in Northwest Michigan offers so many awesome routes, from the Leelanau Peninsula, to The Tunnel of Trees and up to Mackinaw City, down to Grayling, with places like Boyne City, East Jordan, Traverse City, Bellaire, and Old Mission Peninsula, and so many other cool roads and towns to see on the way, that the best way to show those unfamiliar with the area is using a town right in the middle of it all as a starting point. Whatever you’re starting point is, you won’t be disappointed once you get here. So for the Northwest Michigan rides, everything is based out of Central Lake, in northern Antrim County. One of the favorite rides is The Leelanau Peninsula. With beautiful roads winding through the wine vineyards, lakeshores (Lakes Leelanau & Michigan, and Glen Lake), and Sleeping Bear Dunes. From Central Lake, head west on C624(Old State Rd) to NE Torch Lake Drive. Go south following the shoreline of Torch Lake to Hill Rd, just south of Rapid City. Hill Rd only goes to the right, and in about 1 mile you will be at M-72, which following west will take you to US31/M72. As you head south you will pass through Traverse City, along the bay. Stay to the right on M22, which follows the West Bay up through Suttons Bay and on to Northport. From Northport ride south to Leland on the west side of the peninsula. From Leland continue south on 22 to Glen Arbor. From Glen Arbor, be sure to continue west to historic Glen Haven, then south on M109 will take you to Empire and back to M72 East back to TC. Continue North on US31 in Acme to M88 East in Eastport, which will take you back to Central Lake. Click on picture for Thunder Roads.
